The cool crispness of autumn is here, bringing with it a harvest of energy for us to put to good use. Here at Touchstone Bodyworks, we continue to define the vision of our practice, utilizing this energy to work through and sustain our creative process.
Through the summer it became evident that our growing group of practitioners had a common thread amongst us - that we all approach our work guided by the principles of natural health. In keeping with these principles, we each are committed to using our individual talents in a manner that will support you, our client, holistically on your path to optimal wellness.
"Optimal wellness" is a phrase you will hear from us often, as we work together with you to re-balance those parts of your life that are causing stress to physically manifest in your body. These areas may include diet and nutrition; exercise; stress management through bodywork, yoga, meditation and classes; healing past traumas; addressing imbalances in the emotional self, such as depression and anxiety, as well as education for self-care.
Simply put, optimal wellness means being the best you can be at a given point in time. It does not preclude illness and does not require perfection. It is a process that is best served by having patience with oneself, and a willingness to look at some of the areas that are no longer serving your greatest good any more.
Our bodies naturally strive for balance in a process called "homeostasis." When we are not in balance, our body's messengers of pain, weight gain or loss, and depression and/or anxiety come knocking at our door. These messages are clues to what lies beneath, and are syptoms, but are not at the root of our discomfort. To achieve true wellness, we must seek out and remove the underlying cause, not simply mask or sedate it, to return to balanced health.
All of this being said, it is ultimately your choice that guides our work together. The wellness goals that we set are determined by the quality of life that you desire.
In the very near future, we will begin offering formal wellness consultations where, through answering a series of lifestyle questions, we will be able to help you assess your current level of wellness and, together, set goals for the quality of life that you choose.
As our practice has evolved at the studio, we have continued to bring on new practitioners who are here to support you in your journey of health. We welcome therapeutic licensed massage therapist, Nancy McGonagle; Melissa Jackson, a therapeutic LMT, as well as an advanced polarity practitioner; and Jackie Winant, an LMT, polarity practitioner, craniosacral therapist and reflexologist. We also welcome holistic health practitioner Chelsea Fyrberg, our diet and nutrition intern. Chelsea now facilitates our ever-growing "Overcoming Inertia - Nutrition and Weight Loss Support" group and is available for free individual dietary consultations.
We have added a couple of new areas to our web site - "Nutrition", where you will find healthy recipes as well as great links to helpful articles on diet and nutrition, and "Resources." Our Resources link will bring you to a page of businesses that we affiliate with and recommend that you explore. One such link is to Fiddlehead Center for the Arts here in Gray. We currently are collaborating with Fiddlehead on a wellness fair scheduled to take place in early January 2009, and highly recommend their yoga and tai chi programs, as well as their many other offerings to whet your creative appetite.
Another link to check out is Sher Designs. Owner and designer Sharon Emery discovered her love of gemstone jewelry making in her own journey to greater wellness. As energetic beings, our bodies positively respond to the differing vibrational qualities of crystals and gemstones, offering yet another avenue for improved health.
There are groups within our community that seek to help those in need. One such group has creatively chosen to raise funds by offering delicious hot beverages and baked goods, as well as live entertainment, once a week. The Crossroads Cafe, located at the Crossroads Community Church, offers a welcoming environment Saturday evenings from 6-9 p.m. to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. The Crossroads Cafe is the brainchild of Anthony McKeown, who is very active in the community raising funds for those in need. All proceeds from the Cafe (after expenses) go to this very worthy cause. (* It should be noted here that, although the cafe is located in the Crossroads Community Church, non-church members are always welcome, and the proceeds from the cafe often go to help those in the community that are not necessarily affiliated with the church.)
Speaking of cafes, keep an eye open for our new healing retreat, Namaste' Cafe', where you will be able to find sustenance for mind, body and spirit. Namaste' Cafe' hopes to soon serve up luxurious foot soaks and delicious edibles in a relaxing, healing atmosphere. Coming soon!
