pH and Your Body

With the return of cold weather arrives the annual cold and flu season. What can we do to ensure our health?

Recently, as I was researching natural remedies for an unrelated condition, I happened to find some intriguing information about pH - acidity and alkalinity- in our bodies, and how it affects our health. Several reliable resources confirm that, by eating and drinking certain foods that create a more alkaline environment in our bodies, we can maintain good health. It seems that viruses, bacteria and fungi, such as candida, need a more acidic environment to flourish. By ingesting foods that create alkalinity in the body through the digestion process, we can alter our pH ... and stay healthy.

The typical American diet, unfortunately, tends to create a much more acidic response in our bodies. Foods that promote acidity, such as red meats, processed foods and sugar, all make us much more prone to catching the latest, and not-so-greatest, "bug".

As far as I'm concerned, and you may agree, this is definitely a case where "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". For the last two months I have been drinking a very tasty beverage I refer to as "Lemon-Aid" daily. Lemons are a natural detoxifier with the ability to reduce mucous and phlegm (good to know if you are an allergy-sufferer). Lemons, and lemon juice, even though they taste acidic when we eat or drink them, actually result in a strong alkaline response in our bodies through the digestive process. Since I've been drinking my "Lemon-Aid", I've noticed a significant reduction in sinus congestion from my winter allergies, as well as greater energy and a reduction in any post-holiday sugar cravings I was experiencing. And, I've been healthy.

One must keep in mind that this is not a cure-all. It is simply one part of an overall wellness plan. Getting adequate rest, sleep and exercise still play important roles in your total health.
